The global food sector faces critical challenges related to food waste, food insecurity, and the carbon footprint of food production and consumption. Nearly one-third of the world’s food is wasted or lost every year, yet a growing number of people are starving. This unsustainable pattern contributes to more than 1.3 billion tons of waste annually and generates 3.3 billion tons of greenhouse gases.
The traditional linear “take-make-dispose” economy is unsustainable. By 2050, with a global population expected to reach 9.8 billion, we will need 70% more food than what is consumed today. The circular economy offers a promising alternative, viewing waste as a valuable resource that can create value in other production and consumption processes.
“Circular Food Economy: Reducing Waste and Carbon Footprint” (CIRCFOOD) is an innovative Erasmus+ cooperation partnership that addresses these challenges by promoting circular economy principles in the food sector. The project focuses on reducing food waste, analyzing food insecurity, and lowering carbon footprints across participating European countries.
CIRCFOOD empowers youth workers and young people with the knowledge, skills, and tools to implement circular economy practices in their communities, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient food system.
Enhance the capacities of project partners in developing, implementing, and evaluating youth work activities on sustainability and circular economy in the food sector.
Conduct comprehensive study on food waste, food insecurity, and carbon footprints in participating countries, producing valuable reports and guidelines for youth work organisations
.
Develop handbook, toolkit, and online resources to empower youth workers and educators in sustainable practices and food waste minimisation.
Create interactive online learning courses and educational platform focused on circular economy principles and reducing food waste.
Ensure long-term use and dissemination of project outputs through online platforms, campaigns, and a final conference.
